CanTeen
|

CanTeen is the only New Zealand
not-for-profit organisation supporting young people aged 13 – 24
living with cancer. Their mission is to support, develop and
empower young cancer patients, siblings and bereaved siblings,
by providing a national peer support network offering
professional educational and recreational programmes.
|
|
CANTEEN NATIONAL PROGRAMS
The aim of CanTeen national programs is to
- Identify, promote, and help to meet the needs of teenage
cancer patients and their teenage siblings throughout New
Zealand.
- Provide all CanTeen members with the opportunity to cope
optimally by socializing, communicating, and sharing experiences
with one another.
David Garb has been running national programs for CanTeen for
the past 9 years. He also works with individuals and families
that have been affected by cancer.
Currently, the following programs are offered throughout the
year: |
|
REAL |
A REAL workshop is a must for any CanTeener to be Rejuvenated,
feel Empowered, gain Awareness and Let Go. A REAL workshop is a
chance to share experiences with other CanTeeners in a fun and
safe environment. You'll learn skills including:
- Communication skills
- How what we do and how we react impacts our relationship with
yourself and others
- Skills to deal with grief and change
Adolescent counsellor David Garb facilitates the workshop at
Living Springs outside of Christchurch and has 22 years
experience in this area.
REAL workshops are available to all Members of CanTeen.

TEENLINK |
|
At CanTeen we believe that the best people to support young
people going through a cancer experience are those who have
'been there, done that'. Teen Link offers training and mentoring to Members to equip them
with the skills required to support other Members who are either
new to CanTeen or who may require extra support while in
hospital or at home.
The Teen Link workshop consists of two weekend modules with a
placement period between the two modules. During Module One Members are taught skills to assist them in
the Teen Link role. These skills include communication and
handling situations that may arise during their placement
period.
During the placement period potential Teen Linkers are supported
by staff to put their skills into action and complete 10
sessions with new Members.
Potential Teen Linkers then come back together for Module Two to
evaluate and review their placement periods.
Members who wish to become a Teen Linker must be over the age of
16 and have completed a REAL workshop in the past 18 months.
This is the only pass/fail programme within CanTeen.
We take our Peer Support role seriously and therefore Teen Link
is one of our most involved programmes in terms of Members
helping Members. |
|
EMPOWERING SELF |
Teenagers often have a lot to deal with, without throwing cancer
into the mix. The purpose of this workshop is to increase the
self esteem of the participants, with the sole focus being on
their relationship with themselves. Topics that will be covered include;
- Where did you learn about who you are?
- What are the barriers (both cancer related and generic) to
good self esteem
- Ways to implement change in order to increase self esteem
|
|
EMPOWERING RELATIONSHIPS |
The purpose of this workshop is to explore relationships, how
they work and how to maintain them, as well as providing you
with the skills that can be applied to developing the
relationships you have with family members, intimate partners,
friends, and in the work place. The purpose of this workshop is to look at:
- how relationships work
- examine participants current relationships
- what sabotages a good relationship or friendship
- how to maintain relationships with self and others
This workshop will also look at how cancer affects these
relationships. Through this exploration, you will then be able
to make more conscious choices and change behaviour patterns
that are no longer serving you.
As this programme is for senior CanTeen members, it allows for
an in-depth exploration into your own experiences and
challenges. |

Completing a REAL course before attending is preferred. |
